The Gilgo Surfing Championship was originally a party held in the summer of 1961 in an area of Long Island, NY called Gilgo Beach. The party was a small gathering thrown together by some wealthy parents for their surfing teenagers. Back then, surfing was a novelty or curiosity to most of the East Coast population. As more people began surfing the contest grew. It became a popular annual event with both local and visiting professional surfers as part of The Grand Prix of Surfing Tour (a series of contests from Gilgo to Cocoa Beach, FL). The lunar-themed contest program for the 8th Annual Gilgo Beach Surfing Championship commemorated the first moon landing, which had occurred just weeks previous that summer on July 20th, 1969.
